History of Microneedling
Collagen induction therapy, including dermarollers and dermapens, skyrocketed in the ’90s for smoothing scars and revamping skin texture. What is Microneedling

Derma Roller vs Dermapen? What’s the difference?
Let’s talk about derma rollers. They work by rolling needles over your skin like a little pastry roller. The needles enter and exit your skin at an angle. The ‘paddle effect’ that follows causes a sequence of more painful, arching wounds that need additional healing time. Because of this, the needles may eventually burr or get dull. Who wants blunt needles repeatedly pricking their skin? No, thanks!
On the other hand, a microneedling pen is a motorized device with a disposable, sterile needle cartridge installed at the tip. It penetrates the skin vertically as it moves across the surface. In comparison to a derma roller this method does not cause unnecessary tissue damage. The Dermapen 4 takes it up a notch with a built in RFID chip that controls the depth of the puncture, ensuring precision and gentleness.
Key differentiating factor between the original Dermapen and other skin pens is the oscillating speed of the needles and the quality of creams and serums that are applied and infused into the skin. Dermapen 4 is fast, creating up to 1900 injections each second. In 10 minutes you could have one million flawless micro-channels in your skin. Although, the depth may be adjusted from 0.2 to 3.0 mm, most treatments don’t require more than 1mm for incredible results.
Don’t get me wrong, some scars may require needling 3mm deep. However, this should be left to qualified professionals in a sterile environment equipped with appropriate instruments. And the Dermapen device has a special scar setting that guarantees accurate and secure operation.
Deeper and more invasive treatment is not necessarily better. Shallower injections have proven efficient in various conditions, even in clinical setups. Several skin pens in the market today, aim to mimic the success of the original Dermapen. They claim to reach depths up to 3mm which in untrained hands can be simply dangerous. A non-professional user can easily cause excess damage to the skin while being convinced this is the correct protocol.
How Mesotherapy is different from Microneedling?
Both methods trigger a reaction in the skin’s deeper layers, but are each optimal for activating different types of regenerative stimulation. Mesotherapy enables a cocktail of nutritious ingredients to be injected deeper but locally into the skin. This is done by hand or using a device like a meso-gun which is fitted with a single needle.
In contrast, microneedling involves gentle gliding of numerous microscopic needles over the tissue. This creates a wound that promotes cell regeneration, and exfoliation. A product can be then applied topically to be absorbed through the injection channels.
Both techniques can be used, and are effective for triggering collagen and elastin production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, loose skin, and skin pigmentation issues.
