Preparation for ultrasound examination of the urinary system

Ultrasonography of the urinary system requires the patient to prepare for the procedure. You should be on an empty stomach for at least 4 hours and refrain from taking meals and unclarified fluids. Two hours before the ultrasound examination, the patient drinks about two liters of non-carbonated water. The bladder as full as possible is best visible, so it is best to use an easily digestible diet two or one day before the examination. Conversely, people with flatulence should take medications to reduce the amount of gas in the intestines. Before the ultrasound examination, we do not chew gum or smoke cigarettes.

Ultrasound examination of the urinary system

During the ultrasound examination of the urinary system, the patient is lying on his back. However, during the examination, the radiologist may ask the patient to turn on one side or the other. We put a special gel on the stomach. Then the specialist doctor, using an ultrasound device and a special probe, will try to capture the best image of the bladder and kidneys. During the examination, your doctor may also ask you to go to the bathroom and urinate to assess the structure of an empty bladder. The ultrasound examination takes approximately 20 minutes.
