Correction of protruding ears London. Otoplasty – ears pinned back.

After
Before

The treatment is recommended when the appearance of the auricle differs from the standards of beauty and anatomical aesthetics.

Surgical correction of protruding ears is also known as ear plastic surgery, ear pinning otoplasty. Eskulap Clinic in London offers ear corrections performed by specialists in the field of head and neck surgery. The main determinant of procedures for protruding ears are psychological factors – a syndrome that affects self-esteem, mental state and social activity. This procedure is performed when the auricle is sticking out, usually due to flattening of the auricle or enlargement of the outer shell.

If a child’s ear correction is required, it is recommended between the ages of 7 and 14. During this period, the ear is shaped, and the earlier the operation, the better the effect. It also reduces the time children receive unpleasant comments from peers, which are often the main motivation for ear correction.

How to prepare for the surgical correction of protruding ears?

A consultation visit always takes place before the otoplasty surgery. It sets out the patient’s expectations about the future appearance of the ear and determines the likelihood of achieving this goal. It is very important that patients are mentally prepared for surgery – informing them about unpleasant consequences, mainly related to postoperative pain. It is also worth mentioning that patients need to be aware of the time constraints associated with exercise, social and professional activities related to surgery and rehabilitation.

Medications such as aspirin are not recommended prior to ear correction surgery as they may reduce blood clotting. Smokers should give up smoking for at least two weeks before and after surgery. If the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, the patient must be on an empty stomach, i.e. not eat, drink or even chew gum for 6 hours before the procedure.

    Contraindications to the procedure?

    • neoplastic and some autoimmune diseases (including collagenosis, i.e. connective tissue diseases),
    • pregnancy
    • skin changes,
    • epilepsy,
    • vascular blemishes,
    • coagulation disorders,
    • bacterial or viral infections, colds, herpes,
    • ongoing or recently terminated antibiotic therapy.

What does the procedure look like?

The selection of the surgical technique is made during a consultation visit and is adapted to a specific situation – anatomy, patient’s expectations, indications and contraindications.

Depending on the patient’s age, local (adult) or general (pediatric) anesthesia may be used during ear surgery. The procedure consists in making an incision in the back of the auricle and using appropriate incisions and internal sutures in order to properly model the cartilage. External wounds are also closed with soluble or non-dissolving sutures. The size and location of the surgical wound makes the scar almost invisible. After ear surgery, adults can go home immediately.

Correction of protruding ears after the procedure.

After plastic ear surgery, the patient may experience slight bruising and swelling for several days. During the first few days after the procedure, you may experience pain of varying severity, which can be relieved with commonly used painkillers. The sutures are removed after approximately nine days and should be checked again after six weeks. For optimal aesthetics, follow your doctor’s instructions, especially wearing a tourniquet for two weeks to avoid bending or mechanical damage to the ear. It is recommended that you wash your hair only after removing the stitches. Contact sports were banned for two months.

During this period, direct sunlight to the treatment area should be minimized, and tanning beds and saunas must not be used. When planning the date of the auricle surgery, it is worth taking into account that the auricle is particularly sensitive to hypothermia after the auricle surgery. It is recommended to wear the headband at night.
