Ultrasound of salivary glands at Eskulap clinic in London.

Salivary gland stones

Chemicals in saliva (saliva) can sometimes crystallize into a stone, which can then block the salivary ducts. Some people form one or more small stones in the salivary gland. It occurs most often in people between the ages of 30 and 60, although it can occur at any age. Most of the stones are found in the tube (duct) that runs from the submandibular gland below the jaw. The stones block the duct, causing saliva to accumulate behind them, causing it to swell.

The most common reasons for a referral are:
• Swelling
• Pain
• Ache while eating
• Reduced jaw opening

    Tumors of the salivary glands

When cells reproduce out of their normal control anywhere in the body, they cause a tumor that may be cancerous or non-cancerous. Tumors can occur in any of the salivary glands. Fortunately, most salivary gland tumors aren’t cancerous. About 8 out of 10 tumors are located in the parotid gland and about 8 out of 10 parotid tumors are non-cancerous. All tumors require urgent examination.

Diseases related to inflammation of the salivary glands.

The most common infection that greatly affects the salivary glands is mumps. It is a viral infection that most commonly affects the parotid glands, although it can affect other salivary glands. It usually affects both parotid glands, so there is swelling on both sides of the face; however, in some cases it is one-sided. Generalized swelling of the salivary glands may be caused by a disease in other body systems (systemic disease). The most common of these is a condition called Sjögren’s syndrome which causes very dry mouth.

Other medical conditions that can cause swelling of the salivary glands include:

    • Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia
    • Sarcoidosis. This is a condition where, due to inflammation, small lumps (nodules), known as granulomas, develop in different places in the body. These granulomas are made up of cells involved in inflammation
    • Diabetes
Cushing’s syndrome. This is a condition caused by too much steroids in the body, caused by taking medications, or caused by the body producing too much natural steroids.
    • Hypothyroidism
    • Celiac disease. This is due to an allergy to gluten
    • Too much alcohol
