One way to diversify hair loss (alopecia) is by using the localisation and time determinants. Hair loss can affect just the hair on the scalp or the entire body can be under it’s influence. Hair loss can be temporary or permanent. Heredity, hormones, medical conditions or just ageing can also influence hair loss. Another term that is related to hair loss is Baldness. It describes excessive hair loss from your scalp. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness. Some people prefer to let their hair loss run its course untreated and unhidden. Others may cover it up with hairstyles, makeup, hats or scarves. And still others choose one of the treatments available to prevent further hair loss or restore growth.
Types of hair loss in men can be of various origin and can generally be divided into two different types. The male pattern baldness which is also knows as AGA androgenic alopecia is the most common variation of hair loss in men. The thinning of the hair at the temples and crown is the most common sign of androgenic alopecia. This is often accompanied by a receding hairline. It’s a common problem in men who have high levels of testosterone in their blood. Specifically the dihydrotestosterone otherwise known as DHT which is very closely related to testosterone, it is the main problem. When levels of the male sex hormone in the blood are high this causes thinning of hair, weaker hair follicles and in consequence the hormone may lead to a complete stop in producing hair in specific areas on your scalp. Check if anyone in your family had problems with hair loss as unfortunately Androgenic alopecia is common to be inherited from your family members. While writing this article I have to come clear with all of you and I admit that I also am in this group of males who suffer from this kind of hair loss. It can’t be avoided. I am loosing hair on top of my head and the funny thing is that I have plenty of strong, thick hair all over my body. A typical sign of testosterone levels being high.
The other type of hair loss is called Spot baldness. In medical terms we call it Alopecia areata or AA for short. It is a completely different entity to hormonal hair loss mentioned above. Spot baldness is an autoimmune disease. This means that your own body treats parts of your hair follicles as foreign bodies by mistake and attacks them with antibodies. This results in bald patches on the scalp. By attacking hair follicles your body decreases the total number of follicles available as they are never going to grow back.
Androgenic alopecia can also be found in women. The preferred term is FPHL – female pattern hair loss. A characteristic hair loss pattern in women can develop not only during teenage years. Female pattern hair loss is most common problem of women with hair loss and is manifests itself by miniaturization of hair in the parential and frontal areas of the scalp.
There are various conditions that are known to be related with female pattern hair loss. Polycystic ovarian syndrome, raised levels of aldosterone, and hyperprolactinemia are just a few common comorbidities. However, the exact causes of FPHL are unknown and further studies are needed to establish if insulin resistance, obesity or hypertension can be a determinant of female pattern hair loss.
